Now I must say that not knowing that something is to "difficult" for a beginner, is a good thing it means I was not scared to try something I wanted to knit. I personally agree with the principle that new knitters should not start with scarves unless they want to. A hat knit in the round is much quicker than scarves, even socks are better. So when I decided I wanted to knit socks I went to the local Hobby Lobby and bought the cheap acrylic sock yarn that was washable and came with a pattern on the ball band. I was aspiring that when I got socks done I could get the Lyon Brand sox yarn that was wool. I suppose I should mention the little fact for all you yarn snobs out there I was a Senior in high school and my Mother is a only parent with three children of whom I am the youngest I did not have money to spend 16 dollars on a pair of socks or even 8 that the sox sock yarn would have cost. The 3 dollar acrylic, yes, that I could afford especially since only one ball was called for by the pattern. But unfortunately my family has a tendency to breed amazon women while I am not over 5'8", I on the other hand inherited the large feet and I could not complete the socks. Stash is awesome I had some cotton yarn of a similar weight I finished the socks they only took me three days for the pair I was so fascinated with knitting down the cuff and turning my first heel utter magic and I became the sock addict that I now am and toes oh my toes goes so fast and your down except for kitcherning the toe closed thank you Nancy Bush your directions that rock.

Agreed. I think beginners should definitely venture beyond the scarf. What's a sweater if not two squares and two rectangles???
